Of the four AKC recognized hairless breeds, the Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is the only one classified as a sporting dog, specifically a sight hound.  This puts them in the same category as a greyhound. These dogs come in three sizes, small, medium and large.  They range in height from a small 9.75 inches to 25.75 inches as measured from the shoulder to the ground.  Their weight ranges from 8.5 to 55 pounds.  The life expectancy of the Peruvian Inca Orchid is shorter than other hairless breeds, ranging from 12-14 years.

PIO’s are considered very affectionate and loyal to family members, but only rate as moderately good with young children. As such it may be prudent to wait until your children are 8 or more years old before getting a PIO. PIO’s have a moderately high energy level combined with a moderately high need for mental stimulation.  They make a wonderful companion for those who like to camp, hike and play ball with their dog.

The PIO is considered agile and smart. The hairless variety comes in every skin color.  Their hunting instinct means that they should be supervised around cats, small dogs and other animals.  These impressive-looking pets were originally all small-sized dogs, but when Europeans came to Peru the original PIO’s interbred with old-world larger dogs resulting in the modern versions we have today.
